One of the first steps in understanding Astrology is to learn about the Lagna or the D1 Chart. The Lagna, or the Ascendant is the position of the planets at that moment in time when the infant native takes her/his first breath at birth i.e. the first cry immediately upon delivery. The Lagna chart is an imprint not only of patterns surrounding the native’s life, but also her/ his physical appearance and personality. It is the foundation of the horoscope, the starting point, the most important chart, and from where most insights are generated.
Although there are many divisional charts and one can get into as much detail as one wishes to, I feel over reliance on specifics is not required. Going too deep can lead to wishful thinking. It is very easy for anyone, especially those going through life’s tough challenges, to get side tracked with speculative questioning and miss the bigger picture. The Lagna captures the bigger picture – most of it. Below are what the houses signify.
1st House – As the most important house of the horoscope, it is important to have strength here. This is the throne or the head, the eastern horizon, the house that contains the rising sign. The lord of the 1st is the King of the horoscope, and if the King is strong, everyone is strong; if the King is weak, everyone is weak. This house is both a Kendra and a Trikona. I am not going by what the books say, but rather my research, which has led me to conclude that most planets do not give unfavorable results in this house. I have heard people claim that Saturn does not achieve digbala in this house, but even Saturn, especially if placed strongly, such as in Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius, can be very auspicious and bless the native with many desirable qualities. My only observation is that Saturn in this house has a tendency to delay or destroy marriage as it is unable to balance its high sense of duty with home life – but not always. The other exception is a weak or debilitated moon, especially in men.
2nd House – As the house of financial resources, cooler and softer planets, i.e. The Moon and Venus are best in this house. I have also observed that in the 2nd, Jupiter can provide financial resources from the paternal or father’s side. A hot Mars, especially if weak, could burn away resources, and Ketu, as the karaka of renunciation and moksha finds little purpose in the house of money. A debilitated Mercury could also be problematic.
3rd House – This is the house of courage, energy, abilities, and immediate surroundings. Certain planets are more favorable in this house. Saturn will bless the native with persistence and grit, Rahu with resilience and energy, Mars with physical strength and good reflexes, and Mercury with entrepreneurial abilities. This house is considered the fall for Jupiter, but even Jupiter can bless the native with great influencing skills and command over communication. This is a bad placement for Ketu and Venus, both of which could make the native lethargic. Delays in life as a result of laziness and procrastination are common with these placements. In male horoscopes, Venus in 3rd can bless the native with a strong and determined wife. Creative pursuits are best if Venus is placed here.
4th house – Though this is the house of fixed assets, the Southern horizon, one’s mother, and matters concerning home and personal life, I also like to identify the 4th as the house of one’s inner self and spiritual progress. Just like your fixed assets are immovable, so is your inner depth. This makes sense because the 10th, right opposite, is the house of public self and professional progress. I have observed many yogis and saints to have strong placements in the 4th house. Jupiter is particularly strong here and can bless the native with land, properties and beautiful homes. Mars, who is Kartikeya, is weak in this house – a hot planet finds imbalance in the house of tenderness. There is a mythological story associated with Kartikeya that I am not going to cover at the moment, but Mars in this house can create the yoga for delayed marriage, unfulfilled desires and depression, but not always. If you have this placement, it is best to employ physical work or sport in your life. Saturn, the hard-hearted planet has no synergy with a soft, ‘inner-feelings’ house that signifies motherly affection. He can give the native struggle and limited means in the early part of life. As such, it is more a problem for the native’s parents. But I have also observed that such people are determined and have high work ethics. Saturn in the 4th, in the long run, can bless the native with immense success and the tag of being ‘self-made.’
5th House – As a Trikona, and the house of luck, love, children and education, this house is favorable for most planets. The exceptions could be Saturn and Rahu, but once again, not in all cases. If unfavorable, there could be delays in education, disappointments in matters of love, or troubles with conceiving or childbirth.
6th House – Saturn naturally signifies discipline and is very happy in the house of efficiency and routines. So is Mercury who can complete multiple tasks quickly and effectively. A strong placement in this house makes a person proactive and resourceful, attributes necessary to keep problems, such as enemies and illnesses at bay. Saturn in this house will give suffering to one’s enemies. Mercury will make the enemies helpless. Rahu will cast a dark shadow on the enemies driving them insane thereby leading them to self-destruct. And Mars, the warrior, will ward off all troubles with his fierce determination and energy. Saturn in Libra and Mars in Aries in this house are perhaps the highest forms of Shatruhanta yoga. Such people will win over their enemies and troubles.
7th house – The 7th house is the house of marriage, partnerships and long-term associations. This is an important house for business and trade given they often require long term commitments with other parties. Marriage requires sacrifice and patience and hence Saturn, who achieves digbala in this house, is very favorably placed here. It might be surprising to many, but I have observed that this house is not a favorable placement for Jupiter. To me, for a long time this was counterintuitive. Perhaps Jupiter’s expansive nature, fierce individuality and leadership traits are cramped in this house of collaboration. Jupiter is also considered a Bhramachari, or a celibate monk. Obviously, there is no point in him being in this house of marriage! Women with this placement might find difficulties in marriage or in seeking a suitable life partner. This is also the house of the abdomen. I have observed that both the Moon and Venus in this house can trigger weight gain especially in male natives.
The 8th House – I find that the 8th is the most difficult house to analyze. I have read many books that have stated that this is the dungeon of the horoscope, and that this is the house of ‘being stuck in.’ It is the house of major transformations, but I have also observed that some very successful people have strong placements in the 8th. Barack Obama has Mars and Rahu placed here. Amitabh Bachchan has 4 planets in the 8th. While the 6th is the house of obstacles to routines, the 8th represents strong roadblocks. Often, people with strong 8th placements will overcome a major obstacle, or have to go through a major learning in life before they see glory. A strong placement here will likely bless the native with rich life experiences. This is also the house of the lower abdomen and prostate. In addition to the 3rd, this is also the house of fearlessness and grit – one needs these qualities to overcome roadblocks. Loans and other people’s money are also studied through the 8th. Though I feel most planets can give both good and bad results here depending on house ownership, fiery Mars, for the most part, is happy here. This might not be a favorable placement for the Moon, especially if it is weak, and if the native is male.
The 9th House – Many consider the lord of the 9th to be the second most benefic planet in the horoscope. This is the Dharma Sthana, and the house of Bhagya or destiny. A strong placement here can reduce the impact of other weak placements in the horoscope, and visa versa. Jupiter, as the natural karaka of Dharma (righteousness or virtue), is perfectly positioned in this house to guide the native towards her/his purpose. This house also has ownership over the paternal side and one’s father. Jupiter, in this house, will bestow blessings from the forefathers, high purpose, knowledge, and wealth. The 9th house is also the key house for examining Pitra Dosha. This house is the fall for Rahu. Unless there are other strong placements in the horoscope, Rahu in the 9th will create turmoil and delays, and can adversely impact the native’s father, his career or health. A weak Mercury, especially if alone, can also have the same impact.
The 10th House – yet another important house in the horoscope, particularly considering the times we live in, is the 10th. Today, your public image, your career, how you project to the world outside, is everything. This is the Northern horizon, the highest realms of your universe. This house shapes what you do in life and as such, a favorable placement here is desirable. I cannot stress enough the good fortune of having a strong placement here. Mars, given his high energy and dynamic personality, and Saturn, given his high sense of purpose and duty, are both well placed in this house. Lord Hanuman is said to have an exalted Saturn in 10th. I have studied the horoscopes of many high achieving people who have such placements. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has Saturn in 10th in addition to many other good yogas. So does Cricketing Legend Sachin Tendulkar. One trait of such individuals with Saturn in 10th is that they remain unshaken when it comes to duty. They can neither be bent, nor broken; for such individuals commitment to work is paramount. Mars in 10th is also a very desirable placement. It blesses the native with great satisfaction from her/ his career. Some say that Saturn has respect for Mars because Mars is fast and takes less time to achieve tasks than Saturn. But I have observed that both placements are equally good. Long-term outlook comes from slow moving Saturn – that is the reason why many businesspersons and industrialists, those with lifelong raja have a strong Saturn. Jupiter and Sun are also good placements in the 10th. I tend to believe that this is the worst placement for the Moon. Fast moving, emotional and fickle minded Moon is unhappy in the house of work. Such natives will have trouble sticking to one career and as such, commission based income or professions in which one has to deal with different people and situations are advisable.
The 11th House – This is the house of one’s social circle. Financial and other gains are also examined from this house. This is also one of the best placements for Saturn. Developing your social circle requires commitment and time; Saturn is the perfect planet for that. It can provide a rich friend’s circle and stable financial growth. Rahu is also good for providing multiple sources of income, but will make the individual opportunistic. I have not been able to conclude on unfavorable placements for this house. In a few cases I have observed that the Sun in the 11th, during its mahadasha, did not give positive results – maybe the ‘giving’ nature of the Sun does not align with the ‘taking’ nature of this house. Still, I do not feel this is a placement to worry significantly about.
The 12th House – The 2nd is the house of immediate resources. Drawing the same analogy, the 12th, is the house of far and away resources. This is also the house of expenses, philanthropy, things up in the air, dreams and desires, liberation or moksha, travel and one’s global footprint. Venus, the planet of dreams and desires, is perfectly placed in this house and can bless the native with luxuries in life. Ketu, the planet of secrets and moksha, is also very favorable in this house (but this does not necessarily mean that Venus and Ketu together in 12th is favorable). I have observed that many global diplomats and businesspersons have Sun in 12th given it is the house of global reach. I have read that Jupiter in the 12th, just as Ketu, can free one from the cycles of birth and death. I have not been able to verify this information! But I have observed that those with Jupiter placed here have led progressive and rich lives especially during Jupiter mahadhasha.
