What is Kaal Sarp Yoga?

The Kaal Sarp yoga is, in the astrological context, one of the most common fears in ‘people have today’. This yoga has been of much interest to me, and I have spent considerable time studying it in the early part of my journey. In fact, it was the first topic I read about in Astrology.

Let me make it clear that there is nothing to fear. Your life is not doomed as a result of this yoga. Many prominent individuals were born with it. Do a Google search on ‘people with Kaal Sarp yoga,’ and you will see names such as George Bush, Sylvester Stallone, Dhirubhai Ambani and Sachin Tendulkar pop up. Considering the people born with it, this should be a highly desirable yoga!

So what is Kaal Sarp? Kaal translates to ‘time,’ or the inevitability of time, and generally suggests predestined forces that cannot be altered. Sarp translates to ‘snakes.’ As such, this yoga literally translates to ‘the curse of the snakes.’ Snakes hold an important position in our culture. They are linked to the Gods, specifically Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, and symbolize certain elements of human nature and form. They are associated with prosperity, hidden treasures, protection, fertility, spiritual awakening, energy and the spine. As per legend, one would have had to violate a snake in some way in a past life for the curse to come into effect. To many, it is believable that such karmic debt could exist. What is debatable is whether such a curse can accurately be evaluated from a horoscope. Technically, when all planets are on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, one has Kaal Sarp yoga. Rahu is the snake’s head in Astrology, while Ketu is the tail.

Over the last 20 years, I have studied hundreds of horoscopes with this planetary placement and I do not have any conclusive evidence that this yoga will lead to trouble. In addition, I have sought guidance on this topic from many learned individuals and I have enough reason to believe that this yoga is modern in origin and has been popularized recently – as such I refer to this planetary arrangement as a yoga rather then a dosha. In other words, I cannot conclude that an individual is cursed simply by observing this planetary arrangement in the natal chart. Sometimes people have Kaal Sarp yoga in their horoscopes and I don’t see any problems with them that are out of the ordinary. At other times, people don’t have Kaal Sarp yoga but I see them endure more than an acceptable share of suffering.

Let alone the planetary arrangement, one could nonetheless be suffering from debt associated with snakes, which is Naga Dosha. If you feel you have Naga Dosha and that life is at a standstill, please check the following:

  • In your, or your extended paternal family, is someone suffering from skin related illnesses?
  • Is there unrest in your household? Naga Dosha will prevent a healthy relationship between people – between brothers, brother and sister, father and son, husband and wife etc. For younger people – Are you able to hang on to relationships? Have you faced setbacks in friendships and romantic relationships?
  • Are you, or someone in your family, suffering from sudden bursts of uncontrolled anger or bitter speech?

If the answer to one or more of the above questions is a ‘yes,’ chances are that you have Naga Dosha. This dosha can block progress – professional, personal, or spiritual. It can delay your life path, making you wander unnecessarily without any goals. Repeated failures in interviews, especially in the last rounds, unsuccessful travels, and problems in business dealings, all could be outcomes of this dosha.

The good part is that this dosha can be addressed. Karmic structure as a result of this dosha can be diluted. The custom can be performed at various pilgrimage sites but to say that it can only be done in a few hours of ritualistic activity would be wrong. It is possible, but many people who have successfully mitigated its ill effects have performed the ritual multiple times or perform it at least once a year. Certain illnesses can be cured with simple medication, for others, medication can be lifelong. Sometimes impacts of rituals etc. can be immediate. At other times, activities need to be performed and precautions need to be taken for longer durations. Naga Panchmi is a good day to perform this ritual. In case you feel you have this dosha, please consult with an experienced astrologer or guru who can direct you onto the right path.
